Overview Angola ’86
It is 1966 and the South African Border War has kicked off with the South African Defence Force (SADF) being sent to South West Africa. As a commander in the SADF, your mission is to lead a counter-insurgency (COIN) campaign to secure the region along the border with Angola. Satellite Odyssey: Prologue
To win over the local population, you’ll need to hunt down and eliminate the SWAPO insurgents. These insurgents sneak across the border stirring up trouble by intimidating locals planting mines and surprising your troops. But SWAPO isn’t the only threat—they’ve got backup from Angola’s army, FAPLA, a Soviet-backed force with bigger ambitions of taking control of the entire region.
FAPLA gives SWAPO a safe base to operate from, but their main goal is to wipe out UNITA, a faction supported by the USA and South Africa. To succeed in your COIN mission you will need to coordinate ground troops special forces artillery Automated units and air support. Training local forces (SWATF) is crucial, but even more important is gaining the trust of the local people. The more they trust you, the better intel you’ll get—a vital element in COIN warfare.
This war is not just fought on the battlefield. As the SADF commander, you’ll also have to manage the support for the war back home. If you lose the backing of the United Nations, the whole effort could fall apart. This game captures the Core of the South African Border War where Tracking insurgents, gathering intel and containing FAPLA’s forces are key to victory.
As you rise through the ranks, you’ll see your uniform change from a junior lieutenant to a general, reflecting your journey through the South African Border War. The game features various factions to control, turn-based strategy gameplay, and a range of authentic SADF units. With political support and tactical operations, from airstrikes to mine sweeping, you’ll experience the full scope of commanding in a complex and intense war environment.
